In today’s technologically savvy world, owning a robust PC shouldn’t necessarily mean that your PC itself provides the power that you need. This is because, whether you are a trader or simply want a virtual space where applications can run round the clock, you need a VPS.
In my newest guide on Michael’s Digital World, I will explain how to install a “Cloud PC” using Amazon Web Services (AWS) for free.
What is a VPS?
In essence, a VPS is a virtual machine that exists in a real server. You get your own resources including CPU, RAM, and storage and can access them remotely. In doing so, you get the ability to run processes and applications even when your device is not powered on.

Step 1: Signing up on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
The first step is getting an account on Amazon Web Services (AWS).. Go to the AWS site and select “Sign up now”.
Type in your email address and account name. Confirm your email with the code that AWS sends to you. Create a strong password (which will contain upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and special characters).
Select the Free Plan: AWS provides a free plan for 12 months (although certain offers might differ, so do not forget to check the current ones). Fill out your contact details and billing information. Attention! AWS can charge you temporarily (approximately $1), which is returned in several days.
Step 2: Run Your Virtual Machine (EC2 Instance)
Once your account has been established, navigate to Console Home.
Underneath the menu located on the left side, select All Services, then click on EC2 (Virtual Servers in the Cloud).
Next, click on Launch Instance.
Choose your OS by scrolling down to Windows and clicking on Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Base (ensure that it says “Free tier eligible”).
Generate a Key Pair and provide it a name. Download the .pem file since you will need this to get your password!
Step 3: Getting Your Password
Wait around 5 minutes to allow the instance to be initialised.
Navigate to your instances page, locate your new instance and then click Actions > Security > Get Windows Password.
Upload the .pem file that you just downloaded and click on Decrypt Password.
Note down your Public IPv4 address, User Name (Administrator) and Decrypted Password.
Step 4: Connecting via Phone (Android or iOS)
To control your Cloud PC remotely:
Open your App Store and download the Parallels Client (or any RDP application).
Click to add a new RDP connection.
Use your Public IPv4 address as the server address.
Use “Administrator” as the username and enter your decrypted password.
Click Connect. And there you go! Enjoy remote control of your Windows desktop via your touch screen device.
Step 5: Connecting via PC
For a more traditional option:
From the AWS console, choose your instance and click Connect.
Navigate to the RDP Client tab and click Download Remote Desktop File.
Open the downloaded file, click Connect, and enter your password.
Pro Tip: If you want to transfer files to your VPS, you can simply copy them on your local PC and paste them into your VPS desktop.

How do I get my Windows password?
In order to obtain your password, you need to have the Key Pair (.pem file) which you have received during the installation process. You should go to AWS console, Actions > Security > Get Windows Password and upload your .pem file.
Can I install apps on the VPS from my phone?
While you can access the Internet via the mobile version, downloading and installing some applications may not be possible directly. The easiest way to install apps on your VPS is by using the PC, copying the installation file from your computer and pasting it into your VPS desktop.
What app do I need to connect from my phone?
I suggest you use the Parallels Client application (for Android and iOS) or any regular RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) application. In order to establish a connection, all you will need is your Public IPv4 address, “Administrator” as the username and the decrypted password.
What happens after the free period ends?
Upon completion of the free trial, AWS will charge you for the use of the resources. If you do not wish to pay any charges, then it is imperative that you terminate the instance.
